Budapest Airport has direct low-cost flights from most of the UK, Ireland, Germany and Scandinavia, plus one-stop routes from North America. Cheap flights and cheap hotels mean a higher share of your invites say yes.

The classic choice. Ceremony on a terrace or in a historic hall, dinner overlooking the river, an after-party your guests can walk home from. Budapest also means direct flights, hundreds of hotel rooms in one district and English-speaking suppliers.

Hungary's wine regions are built for the slow, food-and-wine wedding: a tasting on the Friday, dinner under a pergola on the Saturday, cellar tour on the Sunday. Far better value than Tuscany and far less booked out.

Lake Balaton — north shore villages, Tihany
Balaton gives you a genuine summer-holiday wedding 90 minutes from Budapest: ceremony by the water, sailing, and guests who stay on for a few days. Peak season is July–August, so book the year before.

Hungary has a lot of restored aristocratic houses, many now hotels — which means ceremony, dinner and guest rooms on one estate. The strongest option for an autumn or winter date when you need everything indoors.

Best all-round: long light, gardens at their peak, comfortable heat. Books out first.
July–August
Hot (30–35°C is normal) and Balaton is busy. Great for lakeside, risky for a black-tie indoor day without air conditioning.
September
Our quiet favourite — harvest in the wine regions, warm days, cooler evenings, cheaper rates than June.
October
Autumn colour, dramatic light, real value. Bring a plan B indoors.
December
Christmas-market weddings for small groups. Beautiful, cold, entirely indoor.
Planning
A realistic timeline
12–14 months out
Pick region and date. Two scouting days in Budapest if you can, or a video walk-through with a local planner.
10–12 months
Book venue, planner and photographer — these three go first. Hold a hotel room block near the venue.
8–9 months
Send save-the-dates with flight guidance. Book celebrant, catering tasting, music.
5–6 months
Start paperwork. Order birth certificates, certificates of no impediment, apostilles and official Hungarian translations.
2–3 months
File with the district registrar, confirm the 30-day notice period, finalise numbers, book transport for guests.
2–4 weeks
Final headcount, seating, welcome bags, day-before rehearsal and welcome dinner.

Weddings in Hungary — your questions
Can foreigners legally get married in Hungary?
Yes. Two foreign nationals can marry in Hungary with no residency requirement. You file a declaration in person with the local district registrar, provide passports, birth certificates and a certificate of no impediment to marriage, with official Hungarian translations, and there is normally a 30-day waiting period between filing and the ceremony. Requirements vary slightly by district, so confirm with the registrar and your embassy — see our paperwork guide.
How much does a destination wedding in Hungary cost?
As a planning range: an intimate 20-guest Budapest wedding usually starts around €6,000–€10,000, a typical 60–80 guest wedding lands around €20,000–€35,000, and a high-end city or castle wedding runs €50,000 and up. Our wedding cost estimator breaks this down line by line.
Is my Hungarian marriage valid at home?
A civil marriage performed by a Hungarian registrar is a legal marriage, and the certificate can be issued in a multilingual EU form or apostilled for use abroad. Always confirm the recognition process with the authority in your own country before you book.
Do we need a Hungarian wedding planner?
For anything above about 20 guests, yes — mostly for language, supplier contracts and the registrar paperwork. If you are having a symbolic ceremony with a small group, a good venue coordinator plus this guide is often enough.
When is the best month for a wedding in Hungary?
May, June and September are the sweet spots. July and August are hot and Lake Balaton is crowded; October is beautiful and cheaper but needs a solid indoor backup.
Do suppliers speak English?
In Budapest and at established wedding venues, generally yes. In smaller countryside villages, plan on your planner or venue coordinator translating.
