A 120 km loop, three towns, one day
This is the day-trip driving route — not the area overview. The loop runs Budapest → Szentendre → Visegrád → Esztergom and returns along the western bank, totalling about 120 km and 2h 15m of pure driving with stops timed for opening hours, lunch and afternoon light at the citadel. Leave Budapest by 8:30am to be back by sunset. For background on the area and each town, see our Danube Bend travel guide →
Head north on Route 11 along the Danube's right bank. Park in the P+R lot on Dunakanyar körút (cheaper than the centre) and walk 5 minutes into Fő tér. Allow 90 minutes for the old town and Serbian Orthodox quarter.
Stay on Route 11. The road hugs the river — the dramatic Bend view opens up at Dömös. Park at the citadel upper lot (signposted off Route 11). Climb to the citadel for the panoramic view; lunch afterwards at Renaissance Restaurant in the lower town.
Continue west on Route 11. Park in the lots below the basilica (Szent István tér). The basilica climb takes 30 minutes; allow another hour for the castle hill and Mária Valéria bridge viewpoint.
Cross to the southern bank at Esztergom and return on Route 10 via Pilisvörösvár, or take the M1 motorway for speed. The Route 10 option is more scenic; the M1 saves 20 minutes.
