Lake Balaton

Lake BalatonTravel Guide

Central Europe's largest lake — the Hungarian Sea

Overview

Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe — 77 km long, shallow, warm and ringed by wine villages, lavender fields and volcanic hills. Hungarians simply call it "the Hungarian Sea", and from June to early September it becomes the country's summer playground: swimming, sailing, beach bars on the south shore, vineyards and abbey-topped peninsulas on the north. It's just 1.5 hours from Budapest, making it the easiest big day-or-weekend trip from the capital.

Best Towns

Best Towns Around Lake Balaton

Siófok

Beaches & nightlife

The south shore's biggest resort and Hungary's summer party capital. Long sandy strands along the Aranypart ("Gold Coast") sit next to open-air bars, clubs and the Petőfi promenade. Best for travellers who want lively beach days, easy train access from Budapest and a buzzy nightlife scene.

Balatonfüred

Elegant spa town

The north shore's most refined town — a 19th-century spa resort with a leafy Tagore promenade, marina, cafés and reformed Heart Hospital tradition. A great base for couples, slower travel and ferry hops across to Tihany. Walkable, photogenic and stylish in the evenings.

Tihany

Historic peninsula, lavender, abbey

A volcanic peninsula jutting into the lake, crowned by the twin-towered Tihany Abbey (founded 1055). Famous for purple lavender fields blooming in June, panoramic ridge walks and tiny thatched cottages. Combine it with the Szántód–Tihany car ferry for a perfect day trip.

Keszthely

Festetics Palace

At the lake's western end, Keszthely is home to the grand baroque Festetics Palace and its sprawling gardens. It's also the gateway to Lake Hévíz, the world's largest swimmable thermal lake, just 10 minutes away.

Badacsony

Wine & hiking

A basalt-hilled wine region on the north shore producing crisp Olaszrizling, Kéknyelű and Szürkebarát. Drive or cycle between hillside cellars in Badacsonytomaj, Szigliget and Káptalantóti, then hike the basalt columns for sweeping lake views.

Beaches

Beaches: Free vs Paid "Strand"

Free public shores (szabadstrand)

Open access strips of grass or pebble shore — no entry fee, no facilities or only basic toilets. Best for quick swims and budget travel. Common on the north shore around Balatonalmádi, Révfülöp and parts of Fonyód.

Paid strand beaches

Organised lake-front parks with grassy lawns, showers, toilets, loungers, snack bars, lifeguards and shallow swimming zones safe for kids. Entry is typically 1,000–2,500 HUF (~€3–7) per adult per day. Worth it on hot summer days. Prices are estimates and vary by town and season.

Practical Tips

Practical Tips

  • Best months: June–August for swimming; late June for lavender; September for wine and quiet.
  • Water temperature: typically 24–27°C in July/August — one of the warmest lakes in Europe.
  • Crowds: weekends in July–August are very busy in Siófok and Tihany. Mid-week is calmer.
  • Currency: Hungarian Forint (HUF). Cards are widely accepted but cash is useful at small strands and csárdas.
  • Sun & wind: shade is limited on south-shore beaches and afternoon winds can pick up quickly — sailors love it, swimmers should watch storm warnings (yellow/red flashing lights).
