Central Europe's Inland Sea
Lake Balaton is Hungary's great summer escape — 77km long, warm enough to swim from May to September, and ringed by wine villages, lavender farms and volcanic hillside vineyards. The southern shore is flat, sandy and lively. The northern shore is hilly, scenic and produces some of Hungary's best white wines. Most Hungarians have childhood memories here. It rewards visitors who stay longer than a day.
