Budapest is not the first city you think of for tacos - but the scene has quietly got good. Fresh tortillas, real salsas, proper margaritas and a couple of long-standing Tex-Mex institutions. These are the places locals and expats actually go back to, not just the ones with the loudest sign.
Kertész utca, 1073 Budapest
A modern take on Mexican cooking in the Jewish Quarter - fresh masa tortillas, properly built tacos and a short, confident menu rather than a laminated list of everything. The room is warm and low-lit, the salsas have real heat, and the margaritas are mixed rather than poured from a bottle. Our first recommendation if you want Mexican food in Budapest that tastes like someone cares.

The Budapest institution - open since the 1990s and still packed most nights. Big Tex-Mex plates of fajitas, nachos and chimichangas, a long cocktail list and a terrace near Szabadság tér that fills up the moment the sun comes out. Not the most authentic on this list, but easily the most fun with a group.
Teréz körút 25, 1067 Budapest
Fast, cheap and reliable - burritos and tacos built in front of you, with a decent vegetarian line-up and a hot sauce shelf worth working through. Best used as a quick lunch stop on the Nagykörút or a late bite before heading into the ruin bars.
