Budapest → Hortobágy → Debrecen → Budapest
This is the driving itinerary, not a guide to the region. The route runs Budapest → Hortobágy (220 km, ~2h 15m) on day one, with an overnight in Hortobágy village or Debrecen, then back via Debrecen the following afternoon. Almost all of the driving is motorway (M3/M35), making it one of the easiest long road trips out of Budapest. For background on the Puszta itself — the landscape, sights and traditions — see our area guide →
M3 east to Füzesabony, then M35 toward Debrecen, exit at Polgár onto Route 33 west. Coffee stop at the M3 Atlantis or Polgár MOL. Arrive Hortobágy village by 10:30. Park at the Nine-arch Bridge lot. Lunch at Hortobágyi Csárda; afternoon csikós demonstration at Mátai Ménes (pre-book). Sunset birdwatching from the Hortobágy fishponds boardwalk. Overnight in Hortobágy village or drive 40 min east to Debrecen for more dining options.
Early start for first light over the steppe — best photography window is 06:30–08:00. Breakfast back at the guesthouse, then drive east to Debrecen on Route 33. Park at Kálvin tér (paid, central). Visit the Great Reformed Church and Déri Museum. Lunch on Piac utca.
M35 west to M3, then straight back. The M3 is busy on Sunday afternoons — leave Debrecen by 15:00 to avoid the worst of it. One fuel/coffee stop at Polgár or Füzesabony is enough.
