Szilveszter — Hungarian New Year's Eve — is one of the best nights of the year in Budapest: the Danube lit up, packed squares, bubbly on the bridges and parties until dawn. Here is where to be at midnight, what to book now, and how to get home afterwards.
The key dates for 2026/27
• Thursday 31 December 2026 — New Year's Eve. A normal working day in Hungary until the evening, so shops are open in the daytime and close early. • Friday 1 January 2027 — public holiday. Most shops are shut; museums and restaurants run reduced hours. • Saturday–Sunday 2–3 January — a long weekend, so the city stays busy and hotel prices stay high. If you're flexible, arriving on 29 or 30 December gives you the last Christmas-market evenings before the party starts.
Where to be at midnight (free)
The simplest and most memorable option costs nothing: be on the Danube at midnight. People gather all along the Pest embankment and on the bridges, with the Parliament and Buda Castle lit up and fireworks going off across the river. • Pest embankment between Vigadó tér and the Parliament — the classic view of the Chain Bridge and Castle. • Margaret Bridge and Liberty Bridge — great panoramas, but crowded and windy. • Buda side near Batthyány tér — the best view of the Parliament itself. Arrive by 23:15 to find a spot, wrap up warm (it's usually around 0°C with wind off the river), and bring your own fizz in a plastic cup — glass is best avoided in the crowds. Whether there will be an official city fireworks display this year has not been announced yet; we'll update this guide when it is.
Square parties: Vörösmarty and the Basilica
Both Christmas-market squares turn into open-air New Year's parties. On 31 December Vörösmarty tér and the Advent Bazilika market are open 11:00–03:00, with food stalls, mulled wine and music — so you can eat, drink and count down in the same place. The Basilica market also opens on 1 January (11:00–18:00) for a slow New Year's Day. These squares fill up fast after 22:00. For the market details, see our Christmas markets guide.
Big parties and concerts
• HELLO 2027 at MVM Dome — a brand-new New Year's festival from the team behind STRAND Festival, from 18:00 on 31 December until dawn, with Hungarian headliners including Beton.Hofi playing straight after midnight. Tickets sell out, so book early. • Ruin bars in District VII (Szimpla Kert, Instant-Fogas and the Gozsdu Court area) run ticketed NYE parties — expect queues and an entry fee. • Opera and classical concerts — the Hungarian State Opera and concert halls usually stage festive New Year's Eve performances; check their programmes in November.
Danube cruises and dinners
A New Year's Eve dinner cruise puts you right under the lights at midnight — but it's the most expensive night of the year, and cruises vary a lot in quality. Check exactly what's included (dinner, drinks, live music, whether you'll be on deck at midnight) and the boarding time before you pay. Restaurants offer set New Year's Eve menus at higher prices; good places book out by early December. Make your reservation now if you have a favourite in mind.
A thermal bath to start the year
Soaking off the night in hot water is a very Budapest way to start the year. Rudas is known for its late-night weekend bathing, and Széchenyi is the classic outdoor choice for New Year's Day. Holiday opening hours are published by the baths in December — check before you go. Important: Gellért Baths are closed for renovation and will not be open over the 2026/27 holiday season. See our baths guide to pick an alternative.
Getting home safely
• Public transport runs through the night. Last New Year's Eve, BKK kept all metro lines, the suburban railways, trams 4 and 6 and many other main lines running all night. The 2026/27 timetable is usually announced in mid-December — check bkk.hu before you go out. • Taxis and ride apps surge. Street taxis are hard to find after midnight and Bolt/Uber prices jump; book a licensed taxi through an app or walk if your hotel is central. • Stay central. A hotel in District V or VI means you can walk home — the single best New Year's Eve decision you can make. Our where to stay guide breaks down the areas. • Arriving by plane? Pre-book your airport transfer — 31 December and 1 January are busy.
Book now: what sells out first
1. Central hotels — prices for 30 December–2 January climb from November. Book as early as you can. 2. Party and festival tickets (HELLO 2027, ruin-bar events). 3. Dinner cruises and set-menu restaurants. 4. Airport transfers for 31 December and 1 January. For a realistic budget for the holidays, run your dates through the trip cost calculator.
