When and where
Sziget 2026 runs 11-15 August on Obuda Island (Obudai-sziget), a green island in the Danube in northern Budapest. There's an unofficial "Day 0" on 10 August when campers move in and the first acts warm up. It's the festival's 32nd edition, drawing visitors from more than 100 countries for five days of music, art and general island life. Because it lands in mid-August, expect heat - daytime temperatures usually sit in the high 20s to mid-30s Celsius, with the occasional dramatic thunderstorm to clear the air.
Tickets: what the options mean
Sziget sells day tickets, three-day passes and five-day passes, each in tiered Normal and VIP versions. Camping is a separate add-on, bought on top of your entry ticket - it is not included. As a rough 2026 guide, day tickets start around 75 euros (early-bird from roughly 59), three-day passes run about 225, and the full five-day pass is around 355. Prices rise in phases, so the single best money-saving move is to buy early. Always book through the official site, szigetfestival.com, not resellers.
Getting there from central Budapest
You do not need to stay on the island. Plenty of people book accommodation in the city and commute in - about 20-30 minutes each way. The easiest route is the H5 HEV suburban train from Batthyany ter (or Margit hid) to the Filatorigat stop, then a short signposted walk to the entrance. There are also festival boats up the Danube and bike routes to the island if you'd rather arrive on the water or on two wheels.
To camp or not to camp
Camping is a huge part of the Sziget experience - the island becomes a self-contained city, and staying on-site means you never have to cut a night short or face the commute at 3am. There are several camp types (Basic, Family, Caravan and more), all booked separately from your ticket. That said, it's genuinely optional. If tents and shared showers aren't your idea of a holiday, commuting from a proper bed in the city is a completely valid way to do Sziget - and many first-timers prefer it.
What to actually pack
- A refillable water bottle - staying hydrated in the August heat matters more than anything else - Sun protection - hat, sunscreen, sunglasses; there's limited shade during the day - A light layer for the night - the island cools down after dark, especially near the river - Comfortable, closed shoes - you'll walk far more than you expect across grass and gravel - A power bank - you'll be on your phone for meeting points and photos all day - A small amount of cash for emergencies, though the site runs on a cashless wristband system for food and drink
First-timer tips
- Pace yourself. Five days is a marathon. You will not see every act - pick your must-sees and leave room to wander. - The island is more than the main stage. Sziget runs circus, theatre, art installations and a dedicated Hungarian stage. Some of the best moments are away from the headliners. - Load your wristband in advance and keep an eye on the balance - queues for top-ups build at peak times. - Agree meeting points with your group before phone batteries die and signal gets patchy in the crowd. - Leave a day to see Budapest itself. You're 30 minutes from one of Europe's most beautiful cities - the baths are the perfect recovery the morning after.
